I own two red-eared sliders, and I have found that it is best to leave it on about 12-14 hours a day. If the temperature is below 65 degrees F, leave the light on at night. And, be sure to purchase a light specially designed for use in reptile basking spots, for example, one from Zoo Med or ESU Reptile. I hope this information helps solve your problem.

About 10-14 hours a day, depending on the temps you are getting. The basking site should be nice and warm, about 90F, but not overly hot.

If the basking light is also warming the water, consider getting a good fish tank heater instead. It usually uses less electricity and does a better job of keeping the water 75-80F.

i have two red eared sliders and during the winter when we bring them in the house we usually leave the basking light for a couple of hours. let it rest and then for another couple of hours. during the summer they stay outside in our pond in the back so it gets sunlight from sunup to the time the sun goes over my house. and then they still bask as long as they're comfy. its basically just a "all-in-your-head" kinda deal. so what ever you feel is right.

you should leave the light on from the time u get up to the time the sun goes down
i have a red eared slider and he basks anytime there is sun on his tank
he should use it as the sun turn it on when the sun comes up and when the sun goes down it is more like the wild like he was in the lake or in a pond
