it's a story about a woman who is given to a beast in exchange for her father or sister's lives, depending on what story you read. She basically softens his heart and wins him over, and with a kiss she turns him back into the human he used to be. He was turned into a beast because he was such a nasty man and was all about looks and appearance, but Beauty loved him for who he was, not what he looked like.

The Beauty and the Beast is just one of many stories in a type of folk tale called the Animal Bridegroom category (Another of the famous stories in this category is the Frog Prince. The movie Shrek is a variant on this theme as well.).
Though the details vary, the over all story arc is fairly consistent within the stories. A beast of a man is changed to look like a beast on the outside, for one reason or another a young woman is forced into his company, her love redeems him, and he becomes human again.
It is a metaphor for how the love of a good woman can tame even the vilest of men.
One of the oldest versions is the Ancient Greek myth (Greek Religious story) of the god Cupid (love) and his love for Psyche (thought). It is possible that the story is even older.

Yes it is the story of a prince who is made a bear by a magician, when a girl marries him and kisses him, (without knowing the truth about him), he becomes a prince again.
But beauty is skin deep. WE should not become beasts trying to become beautiful, by applying all sorts of products on our faces..!

there is a prince who is mean and cruel. upon meeting an old, helpless woman (who he sees as a dirty old hag) he treats her horribly. Turns out she's a fairy in disguise and for his cruelty turns him into a beast (and all of his servants as enchanted objects). he can only change back if someone can learn to love him (and he in return). that is...before the last petal on a magic rose (that she gave him) falls.
years later a man gets lost in the forest and ends up at this enchanted castle. the beast is angry that the man has trespassed and puts him in the dungeon. The man's daughter goes out and looks for him, finds the castle and ends up trading her life for his. through time she and the beast fall in love (and he learns to be patience and caring etc.). the spell is broken. everyone turns back. and they all live happily ever after.
