Hi everyone
I need some urgent help...and soon.
so my story:
I am about to sublet this place for 2 months from a person
who lives in a tenement building in Manhattan.
I went and saw it last night and it's ok...
the problem is the person acts kind of shady -
he lyed that he owns the place
wants the entire amount upfront in cash
doesn't show any Id ...
so I am a bit nervous...
Should I go ahead and give him the money and hope
nobody comes and kicks me out in a few days ...?
or should I keep looking ?

What's your take on this ?

Any help greatly appreciated

There have been news reports about scammers taking money for sublets or security deposits on rentals from dozens of people for the same apartment. Of course when moving day comes around and the problem becomes apparent, that person is no where to be found...

Without verifying who he is and if he has any right to sublet the place, you have absolutely no way to know if the apartment is really his to sublet or if he is just a conman with a key.

If you are really interested, you can try to contact the management company of the building to find out if that individual is on their rent rolls - the name of the management company is either posted in the buidling or search the address of the buidling on the internet to find out.

Otherwise, if you can afford to lose the money, and you're a gamblin', feeling lucky sort of guy, take the chance. But if you can't, and don't want to be out the money and without a place to live, then please, walk away and continue your search.

if you know his full name i would google him. And look him up on the New York state website. And see if there is any info on him. I would not pay him the full amount that would be to much money to lose. Really i would just walk away from the deal you don't want to risk not having a roof over your head

first, you should have had him come to the apartment- why not call a Realtor and have them represent you- it will not cost you anything and the agent will know if this person is lying - he will contact the tax records/owner and get the answers.
