It's a company formed from several smaller ones , Associated Daries, ASDA for short !!

ASDA came about because of the original company name Associated Dairies! ASDA!

It is called Asda because it used to be called the Associated Dairies. And further to the above I think that Tesco was named after the founder's wife Tessa Cohen.

It is an acronym. Exactly what of I can't remember - something like Associated Sellers.....
It was originally formed by a load of smaller retailers who relaised they were going to get done over by the big stores springing up everywhere, so they got together and formed a supermarket chain in order to compete.
