It is called Asda because it used to be called the Associated Dairies. And further to the above I think that Tesco was named after the founder's wife Tessa Cohen.

It is an acronym. Exactly what of I can't remember - something like Associated Sellers.....
It was originally formed by a load of smaller retailers who relaised they were going to get done over by the big stores springing up everywhere, so they got together and formed a supermarket chain in order to compete.
