You're going to find that the mac pro is A LOT faster than any PC you're likely to run across. They're also built to handle multiple large applications at once such as Final Cut Pro, and Adobe Photo Shop..........They NEVER crash, and a lot of people find the OS and overall interface is of a lot higher quality then on a PC...............My Mac is over 3yrs old now and it's still faster then any PC laptop I've ever seen........Apples also incorporate a lot of technological advances that don't exist in the PC world like firewire ports (these are like USB ports only 500x faster......makes a big difference when transmiting LARGE files between external hardrives, or professional quality video cameras.) and bluetooth ports (lets you wirelessly network your computer to your cell phone to use as an internet connection, file transfer, etc.......) Apple computers tend to be of higher quality and rarely suffer from common PC problems such as viruses or spam. They may be a little priceier, however it would be EXTREMELY rare to find someone who owns a mac pro and doesn't feel that the cost was worth it.

congratulations!

Mac on intel, go w/ 2 gigs of ram, and just like in windows a > 100gb harddrive.

Macintosh is built on top of UNIX more specifically the Darwin kernel. Also the hardware platform is closed model so this creates stability in that the Drivers dont have to be written such that they work on any platform etc. in this case, the MACbook pro (and MAC pro) uses the ATI video chipset and an intel motherboard. This really cuts down on what ATI has to do to make a stable driver etc...(for example).
Back to the Unix point, this cuts down on the available virus' that exist or can exist. Unix user permisions (a true 'multi user' operating system) are such that a virus cannot trash the entire PC. You might just lose stuff in your home directory and applications specific to your user, but it wont corrupt the Kernel/Operating system as a whole.

Applications in MAC use the .app extension. File installation is VERY easy w/ MAC via the DMG.
Also if you're fortunate enough to have an apple store in your town you can purchase (I think for 99.00) some apple care package that allows you "schedule" training sessions w/ an "apple geek" on how to learn and use the full power of your mac.

Depending on what you want/need the MAC Pro may be a bit of overkill. Also, "fixed PC's" are kind a thing of the past, mobility is a wonderful thing, so unless you're doing video editting etc..go w/ a macbook or macbook pro etc. If you're deadset on a fixed PC then you might be just as happy, with an iMAC.

Also speaking of the apple store, at the end of the month they liquidate their floor models so you can pick up a used in the store model for 15-20% off the price, that'll cut down on that 3k price.

"it" (not "he") can do plenty. you can run any application you want on it, but you'll have to buy them.

i think you should get an iMac, it seems you aren't really in the "pro" category...

why do you need Mac history?
