In the US, there are over a dozen "third-parties" that have significant followings, and dozens more smaller ones.
The US is not a two-party system, despite the success the Democrat and Republican parties have had at sustaining that dual-monopoly.
And yes, we're be much better off if the laws that allow the Democrats and Republicans to maintain an almost exclusive lock on the political process were abolished, and we became a true multi-party system.

I agree almost 100% with the Libertarian parties views. They would be an ideal 3rd party to me.

I think that the political parties should be split as following:
Liberals (left wing democrats) on heavy social topics and for a larger influence of the state
Progressist (with the moderate rep. and democrats) with a focus on individual freedoms, progressist views, backing small business, the middle class and educated people
Conservative pro-christians and so on: republicans

There already is a good third party. The libertarians simply need to hone their message, quit sucking up to the NRA, and raise some damn money.

Third parties tend to be too diverse, and harder to be cohesive. It's harder to keep from being conservative on some ideas and liberal on others. People will want to be liberal on some things, and other people will want to be conservative on those same things.
