I'd recommend Elfen Lied (from ADV Films) if you want something bloody and violent. If your in the mood for lighthearted comedy, I'd suggest Kyo Kara Maoh (from Geneon USA).
For reading, I'd recommend Viz's Monster and Death Note. I'd recommend xxxHOLic from Del Rey.
Don't watch anime illegally. Don't read manga illegally . Support the industry, buy the DVDs and Manga.

Yes, i do =D here are my suggestions:
Anime:
*Ranma 1/2
*InuYasha (ends up with one of those endings that you have to read the manga, but i highly recommend it)
*Kodomo No Omocha (the episodes are a little tough to get but if you download them, you'll love this series for sure =D)
*Card Captor Sakura
*Tsubasa Chronicle (season 3 will come this year)
*Daa! Daa! Daa! (The fansub club is a little slow subbing this)
*Ouran High School Host Club
*Fruits Basket
Manga:
*Kare Kano
*Fruits Basket (I want to read it)
*Ranma 1/2 (I want to read it)
*Ouran High School Host Club (I want to read it)
I HIGHLY recommend all these titles...

Watch ghost hunt. It only has 26 episodes, but you can watch them on youtube or get it in a store or something. Its kind of scary, but a good detective story.

must watch anime are bleach, naruto, bassilik, fullmetal alchemist, full metal panic!, gundam seed, gundam seed destiny, fushigi yuugi, ayashi no ceres, one piece, tokyo underground, great teacher onizuka - gto, etc... the list would be on going but the above that i've mention is exceptionaly good. some of them are still on going and some of them are classic that you cannot miss!

Zatch Bell!!!!!!!! (it is Konjiki no Gash Bell in the Japanese Version) Watch the first episode in English; you would not like it in Japanese (It has some inappropriate stuff). The English version is more approapriate :-)

i only know what to watch (these arent echi!): fruits basket, bleach, naruto, dn angel and tsubasa chronicles
