...Over generalized? Many people are saying how Americans are rude, superficial, arrogant, ignorant, racist, hyposcrites, obnoxious, and even fat. Is it not incorrect to say that 'Americans are stupid', when that implies that ALL Americans are stupid? The only thing that all Americans have in common is the fact that they are Americans.

No kidding. There are ignorant, crass, rude, obnoxious, overly-stereotypical, fat, arrogant, bigoted people all over the world!

Generalizations about all the people from one country, are in large, just idiotic, and when one does such thing, you can usually label them as just another idiot.

America is a odd example, since our popular culture bombards the rest of the world, some good, some bad, whether they like it or not.

So most sit there, watch American television, see American movies, listen to American music, and eat American food, and then come to the realization that they know all about Americans. Many of the worlds' media doesn't help much, as it seems quite popular to show the worst of America as an example of America as a whole, although American media can be just as stupid.

No worries. I've visited many countries around the world numerous times, mosly in Europe, but a few elsewhere, and I remember the people that I met there. But from those experiences, not once have I ever made a base statement about the country as a whole, because of the people I met there. So I met a few unfriendly people in Madrid. Doesn't mean that I'm going to go off and spout about how rude Spaniards are. Then again, I tend to think before I say something, which is something I can't say for some people on this site (mainly the ones who generalize).

Have a good one.

ello,
im british, i used to live in hull and i moved to the US about 4 years ago now, ok like you said not all americans are fat, arrogent, lazy and brag all the time, but i must say the majority do, they are good people for the most part but all very over religiose in the most part, they do like to brag and some of them are very rude, they think that there country is better then everyone els's, hence the land of the free, but to be utterly truthfull, america is one of the most unfree countrys i have ever been to and they are all very goody. BUT like i said before they are not all like that, some of them are great and awesome people =]]

Americans do have many things in common same as people of other countries. That's why its called culture.

For example: Americans are proud, caring, helpful, brave, strong, loving, thoughtful people who understand the pains of the oppressed and are willing to undergo great personal sacrifce generation after generation to free those less fortunate than themselves from hardship and oppression.

Many other countries have something in common with each other... they wish they were Americans.

It's the human race.

Generalizations are made about ALL races...not just Americans!

You know how many times I've had to tell someone that I DON'T own a kangaroo!!??!!!

I think many people make over-generalized statements because they are too lazy to qualify them or they don't truly care about understanding the subject that they are commenting on. Often, they are just looking for their audience to say "yeah, I know what you mean".

Making a correct statement takes thinking, observation, and sometimes, research.

I see your point, but why do people make over-all generalizations about Mexicans, Italians, Chinese, Koreans, Native Americans, French, Russian, etc.?
