The weather vane has probably been around as long as the wheel has. I am quite sure the Greeks or the Egyptians or even the Persian or Babylonian empires had them. And I'm sure it was found serendipitously. The wind vane rotates freely on a vertical rod and becomes aligned by the direction of the wind. A vane can be made of most any material - wood, cloth, copper.
