I used to go through vacuum cleaners more than your average person - they used to only last me a year to 18 months! I tried them all, even a beam central vacuum.
I bought a Dyson and its brill! Don't buy an upright one though - they're big clumsy and don't fit in everywhere. Buy one of the ones with a hose that you have to pull the thing around after you. You can get the Dyson ones with an allergy filter too but they are a bit more expensive. Even the cheaper pull around Dyson are great for getting pet hairs of the carpet and sofa. I have a rottweiler and a black cat and its great at lifting their hairs even though it was one of the cheaper models.
The best thing about them though is that the filter is washable (which you should do every 6 months) and once it is washed its like having a new one again with full suction.
I've had this one now for 4 years and hope to have it a lot longer. Worth every penny!

I have the Dyson animal, and it is AMAZING!!!!! I will honeslty tell you, the only difference between the yellow standard one and the purple animal are the attachments (and about $100) The animal comes with a couch attachment that I have never used. I completely stand behind the Dyson animal, as I have been through about 5 vacuums before....and have had this one for 3 years now. I just wish someone would have told me there was no difference before I spent the extra money...but it's worth it to have a Dyson =)

the dyson is very good, but also expensive (i have had two) my last dyson has a blockage and i cant find a repair man in my area, so i went out and bought a small cheap one to keep me going as i have two big dogs, i ended up with electrolux vitesse petlover. it only cost me £99.00 and its a little cracker. pick all the dog hairs up no problem.
