Start with grass clippings and leaves. You can also add just about any food product that goes through your kitchen. Be sure to keep it aerated in the summer, especially during very hot spells. I have heard you can add ammonia to the pile to get it going strong. Although I've never tried this and don't think it really necessary. Once it is ready for use the compost will almost have a sweet smell to it. Included is a link on how to start one. Good luck!

We put all our scrap food in it as long as there is no meat. We also put leaves in it in the fall and during the winter, we will put the ashes from the fireplace in the garden and till them in in the spring.

Hi Lisa,
One of the best thing you can do is save your coffee grounds and all veggie peels and things like that and put on top of the garden. potatoe skins, tomatoe peels, something in the coffee grounds too. Good luck. I can smell the tomatoes!!!
