Everything in the universe should have a beginning and an end right ?? .. so what would be present at the end of the universe itself .. my friend says that the universe is like a spherical hollow , the galaxies etc are present in this hollow and no one can get past the boundaries of this sphere . What do you think ???

the universe is consitantly expanding and growing and therefore there is no end to it. i think your friend is thinking of something else because there is a boundry around the galaxy of some sort (sorry don't quiet remember the name of it). as of our current technology it is not feasable or possible for us to travel for large distance but tommorow you may never know.

Well, string theory (very much a mathematical theory) suggests that our universe is simply contained with in a higher dimension. Like, our universe is kinda floating around in a higher dimension, amongst other universes that we would never be able to perceive. String theory actually puts stock in their really being 11 dimensions. It says that all things are made up of "strings" that are tiny (think unimaginably small and then smaller), vibrating, 11-D particles that are capable of expanding and contracting. Its interesting to say the least. Take a look at the PBS special about it, I posted the link.

The universe is thought to have been started by a natural event known as the Big Crunch. That explains the Big Bang theory. Many cosmotologists belive that in the future an event will happen that will cause everything that we know to be pulled into a black hole.

hmm...I think that there will be nothing considering that it will be the "end"of the universe...but we probably won't be able to find out. but then again the universe is expanding and people say its infinite..so there wil be no end to the universe

Your friend has no idea as to what he is talking about..
Nothing "contains" the expanding universe..
In the end, their will be nothing but empty cold dark space..
