When you said "earphones", I assume you are referring to the "ear bud" type? and When you say the "best" I assume you refer to quality and value in the real world of affordability!

The best "In Ear" type are without a doubt the Bose Triport IE at £69 from John Lewis or Bose Shops.
Alternatives in that price range include the etymotic ER6 Isolator's at £79 (also the ER6i @£89) from Mobilefun.

I would ask myself a couple of questions first:

1) Do you really want excellent sound?
2) Do you mind wearing the "earmuff" style headphone?

If you are looking for the best sound there is simply no way around using the "earmuff" style earphones. The reason is the "earbud" style allow too much ambient noise to enter your ear canal. If you are going to go for quality...spend the money and buy BOSE (NC-Noise cancelling) headphones around $200. The next best thing is the Phillip NC headphones for around $80.

If you want earphones that you can jog with or workout with, try them on first. I know that a lot of earphones are wrapped in that hard plastic, but I have purchased a lot of headphones that are simply uncomfortable if I am wearing them for long periods of time. If the saleman doesn't want you to open the package.....leave and try another store.

If you have decided that you want the "earbud" type earphones, I would recommend Sony brand. They usually have high quality speakers and can produce the full range of sound. Cheaper brands tend to have very low volumes and if you have loud ambient sounds in the background, they cannot produce the volume and quality that I look for when rocking out to my iPod.

Hope this helps....

According to the experts, the best headphones on the market are the Koss ESP-950 electrostatics.

Retail price is around £995 (no, that's not a misprint. The best costs money...).
