My disk drive won't open, or read the disk. I've been told that it may be dead and I'd have to buy a new one. But, the light on my laptop, that indicates it's working is flashing. Not sure what this means? Do I have to buy a new one. How do I tell if it is really dead?

well to tell if it is working properly, you should first try cleaning it woth a cleaning kit. if this doesnt fix itm try going to start , then right click on My Computer, select properties, hardware tab, then device manager, which will give you a list of all harware on your computer. expand the DVD/ CD-ROM drives icon and you will see anll the things that have to do with your cd drives, right click on it, or them if your ar not sure which one it is, and select properties, and it will give you a status on the device. here you can try updating drivers and such and if your drive still doesnt work, then you better pull out some cash cause you need a new one.

try to change it's power supply connector (on it's back) and also it's SCSI cables
u can also manually open u'r disk drive (in front )via the small hole by using an office trombone or other then u can put cleaning Cd (Laser lens cleaner)

I should hope that your disk drive doesn't open! Or maybe you mean your optical drive? Optical drives are fairly cheap anyway - even for laptops.
