Anne Bishop author of the Black Jewels Trilogy was terrific. It takes about 50 pages to get into the first book "Daughter of the Blood" but after that it is great.

This might not be exactly what you were looking for; But I absolutely loved this series!!!
I'm not one for vampire type stories; but these are way different. Its not only about vampires; there's werewolves, elves(in one or two of the books), witches, goblins, etc...
Its kinda like based on our time period; but if these creatures were all real. The main character is amazing. She is very intriguing in my opinion. I couldnt put any of the books down. And there's a whole series to read. Its the Anita Blake series.... The first book is called Guilty Pleasures
I also heard she has a fairy type series too; but i havent read any yet. But if they are as good as the vampire books; I know I'm gonna love them.

I'd recommend The Deryni series by Katherine Kurtz. The best trilogy is the Camber series. Camber of Culdi, Saint Camber, and Camber the Heretic. It will draw you deep into that world and you'll want to read all of them.
If you'd like an intriguing mystery with your fantasy, try SEARCH FOR THE SUN by Ellen Anthony.

Anne Bishop, Terry Brooks, Carol Berg, Mercedes Lackey, George R. R. Martin, Terry Goodkind, Robin Hobb, Janny Wurts, Michelle West (also writes as Michelle Sagara), Melanie Rawn, C.S. Friedman, Neil Gaiman, Jim Butcher (he has two series - one is a fantasy one and one is a contemporary fantasy one)... that should keep you busy for a while!

piers anthony's xanth series is pretty cute if you dont mind punny wizardry...also cute would be the myth, and myth-inc. series (sorry dont know the author) for more serious fantasy i really liked the mists of avalon by marion zimmer bradley.
i also recently got a book that looks promising (havent read it yet though) called dragon precinct by keith r.a. decandido
i was also thinking about the incantations of immortality series by piers anthony (fitness guy named one for you another would be; being a green mother) they are really good but not so much dwarves and elves...lots of magic though

There are, of course, the Harry Potter books. You could also try the following books by Eoin Colfer:
The Artemis Fowl series
The Supernaturalist
You could also try the Bartimaeus trilogy.
