as far as i know. you cant do really do anyhting with an ip address. all you can do is find their location-just type it in google and itll give you locatin of where that person is. as far as being harmful- that person can only do a port scan to check your antiviruses weakness and from there attack you.

Well... once someone has your ip they can scan your computer to see which ports or channels are open. If you dont have the right security measures in place they can use the scan results to exploit problems with the software on your computer. They can also use this information to work out who your internet provider is. This is why it is important to have a your windows firewall on. Even still, having you ip address gives them the ability to find vulnerabilities in your computer. If you are on a network with several computers and they are good they may be able toget past your router and iniltrate your network, attacking any vulernable compuers they come across.

Can easily be accessible...

If you know someone's IP address you can find them easily and connect to them using other protocols ;)

It's no harm for a broke individual or useless companies and no threat for super rich companies. The problem is with average people who do so much on the Internet... sayin' more will scare them off so i'll just end it here... sorry!

At most your city, unless you entered personal information on a website that sells or gives your information for free.

Also, be sure your firewalls are working.

If you have DSL, chances are you have a dinamic IP address. If thats the case, just disconnect the modem for 5 minutes, plug it back on, and voila, you will have a brand new IP address.

They get to know the available open ports on your machine. This might be useful for malwares if some of the ports run services that have vulnerabilities.
