It's a natural process, but the term means a way for universities to pocket more money from loney old people.
It's a great way to socialize, as long as you don't take it too seriously. Recently they've been clamping down, insisting that lifelong learning classes be assessed (or graded, marked), and it's taken much of the fun out of it.
