1. No I refuse all ultrasounds and dopplars during pregnancy. I am sure I know people who have had them but I don't really enquire as to their experiences.

6. No most things they "check" such as fetal size and fluid levels are more accurately determined in other ways. Doctors just like machines that go "ping". Most studies have shown routine ultrasounds do not improve outcomes. Of course if there is an indication that one is needed they can be useful -but even in the case of injury or bleeding they can show you the problem but nothing can be done to fix it so what's the point? Either way you are just "wait and see".

"In women with low-risk pregnancies, neither a reduction in perinatal morbidity and mortality nor a lower rate of unnecessary interventions can be expected from routine diagnostic ultrasound. Thus, ACOG believes that ultrasound should be performed for specific indications in low-risk pregnancy."

7. I think the use of dopplers should be restricted to medical professionals and even then it's use should be limited. Someone should develop (though the probably already have) a passive fetal heart listening device that is hooked up to speakers for "mom and dad" to hear the heart beat in the office. Dopplars use strong and sustained ultrasound waves in comparison to standard 2D ultrasounds. And with a dopplar the heartbeat can only be heard a few weeks earlier. Sadly women are unaware of the possible risks of having a dopplar at every visit.

8. Ultrasound is very useful for physiotherapy and chiropractic care. It is useful to heat muscles. It is also useful to diagnose medical problems such as growths (tumours, cysts, etc). However cat scans and MRI are probably more accurate. But ultrasounds are portable and do not expose the patient to radiation. They are far more accurate than a bi-manual exam -put apparently doctors like sticking their fingers in women's vaginas.

9 &10. I saw a chiropractor who used ultrasound. I think that chiropractors who do not generally are more knowledgeable and provide better treatment. Certainly in this case I found that chiropractor less helpful and was glad when mine came back from vacation/
