Wow! I have read all the comments so far and it seems like some things never change.

Firstly, I think most sensible thinking persons would question why the slave owners recieved compensation to the tune of £1 Billion in the first place given that their profits and established wealth was achieved purely on the backs of slavery itself.

If you agree with this, it is only reasonable to question why the slaves themselves were never compensated given the guilty conscience of many on the grounds of Human Rights that sought to abolish this inhuman act -"better late than never" I hear some of you say.

I suggest that all ignorance and prejudice is scrapped and commonsence, based on Human Rights, prevails.

Remember, financial institutions, who are still in existence today, established and profited dearly on the backs of slavery too. And like other institutions, remained racist in their lending process. Just go into the West End of London and you will see the buildings that were built on the backs of African Slaves. Slaves who were chained like animals, treated like dogs, raped and slaughtered without mercy. Would you accept this today?

Those of you who talk of Political Correctness; well I am glad your ancestors did not suffer like others. Many groups in our society have always had it good - check your history!

Skin colour still remains the fundamental focus for racists, hence the psycological scarring of many black communities still continues.

What our country did to the Indian is even worse than what the English and other countries did to the Afro American, but yes ... I do think the gov should give every black person a little kick-back.

Equal opportunity is a joke--it is not work efficient to hire people based on race and quota.

Since my people (Caucasian) came from Ireland in the 1950's ... we had nothing to do with it!

And so sometimes I view Black/White racial disputes as very outdated and in my case prejudiced and actually unfair and in total error.

A better question is this: if the constitution was right to begin with, then why does /did it take so long to amend it--and we are still amending it.
Looks good on paper but is it really real?

IF IT WAS REALLY REAL--WE WOULD NOT HAVE HAD TO HAVE RACIAL RIOTS IN THE 1960'S ABOUT 180 YEARS AFTER IT WAS WRITTEN.
NOW WOULD WE HAVE???
BUT LET'S REMEMBER ... even when there was Black slavery--not all whites were happy about it. And as far as the Indians go ... i think we have NEARLY compensated them enough and that it is time for them to START giving back more to the general community as well as to their own.

In the end if Blacks want to, I think they should be given ample cash should they wish to return to their homelands, and certainly more than just an apology is needed.

I'd suggest the British government put it's resources towards confronting the 12 million+ people that are slaves in the world TODAY and stop wasting time/money on those who are only enslaved by a greedy, "give me! I'm a victim!" mentality!

i think of that is pointless and to be undemanding particularly humorous that the African international locations ought to be asking for something. did no longer they income sufficient via merchandising their very own human beings to the Europeans? If every person have been to get an apology it fairly is the African individuals and the West Indians. And if every person ought to apologise i for my area sense it fairly is the church. if that they had condemned Slavery first of all quite of benefiting from it perhaps society could have theory two times thousands of years earlier the abolishonists began the anti slavery circulation. An apology could make no distinction to every person's existence and not one individual alive immediately merits reimbursement for the soreness and suffering of long ineffective ancestors. i will declare although that comparing slavery to viking raids or Roman circumstances is ridiculous. the end results of slavery of africans via europeans are nonetheless tangible immediately, it won't be used as an excuse for human beings to no longer attempt and be triumphant even though it nonetheless exists.

No the government should not pay out any more money on this matter.
Compensation was paid (apparently, from the account of local news reports recently) at the time. though it was paid to the wrong people. It was paid to the slave owners and not to the slaves as it should have been.
So I want to see the decendants of slave owners traced and then the amount that was paid to the owners collected off the decendants then re-paid to the decendants of the slaves they owned. the only just way to redistribute the money properly and fairly. (allowing for inflation)
so if a slave owner was paid £1000 per slave, the decendants of that slave share the equivilenat sum of money.

Absolutely NOT! This PC junk has gotten way out of line. This stuff happened centuries ago and all those people are DEAD AND GONE! Let the dead rest in peace and let people just care for each other as they are.

Government owes nobody nothing. Slavery is DEAD!! Let it stay dead because people have not been enslaved since the governments freed them. When do WE ALL quit paying for issues of history? Will there ever be an end?? Enough already!

No. This compensation culture is crazy. Whatever happened to forgiveness?Should future generations pay compensation for our mistakes/sins?
Many black Africans sold their own people into slavery and the British people were the first people to condemn it.

They have already received it in the form of welfare benefits. Wherever they have gone since the abolition of slavery, they have taken from society, and refused to get on. They seem to think we owe them but forget we pay them every minute of their lives in grants etc. It's time they stopped using slavery as an excuse to extort money from the white man and as a reason not to work, as well as using it as an excuse for killing, mugging, thieving dealing, pimping ( to mention but a few).
