I just had a fence installe, 6ft privacy fence made of pressure treated pine. It cost a lot of $ but now the guy who put it in wants to charge me more to seal it or he says it will warp when it gets wet. Why didn't he tell me this before?! I budgeted for the fence but don't have the extra $700 to seal it now, if I don't do it is the wood going to be wrecked for sure? How long would it take to warp? I'm planning on being in this house for 5 years and then selling it. Should I try to seal it myself or is it a big job? Thanks for any responses!

I have a wooden privacy fence and I did not put anything on it to seal it. I've had it July 2003. I was going to seal it, but I never could find the time. Some of the boards are just starting to warp a little. I only had one post really bend over to the side really bad, but did not replace it. (I can not see it, it is on my neighbors side.) The fence on the whole does not look bad. So you might get by without doing anything to it. It also depends on where you live. I live in South Florida. Good Luck.

Have a great day!

Pressure treated wood tends to warp Period. It is wet wood when you get. You should let it dry out for several months before you do anything to it. The reason to seal pressure treated wood has more to do with what color you want the fence to weather to. If you seal it it will retain the color it is now, with pressure treated it is not a nice color to start with if you leave it it will eventually weather to a silver gray. You can use a penetrating stain to improve the color but it still should dry out before being stained or sealed. You didn't say how much fencing there is but $700 seems a bit much. You can spray it or roll and brush It is certainly doable either way.

Yeah, I'd definitely seal it!! You're spending the money to put it up - might as well protect your investment - it's like sealing concrete - not enough people do it and their expensive concrete starts to crack way before it's time. $700 is a bit high for the job though. Just tell your guy "no thanks," go to Home Depot and buy a $25 sprayer and the sealer to do it yourself. It's really really easy. It basically ammounts to about 30 minutes of work. In five years a lot of damage can get done to a fence... mainly from yard sprinklers and weather... but not so bad as to render it needing to be redone.

preserving your wood fence is definately a good idea, especially if it get's a lot of sun and yes you can do it your self, you can use laquer or some wood sealer spraying it on or rolling it on, just make sure you do it within two to three weeks before the wood starts to dry out

It will also last longer to seal it once a year
