ok, first of all lets get something straight to all the people answering this question. I have read all the comments and most of you do not know what your talking about. A schizophrenic does not have two or more personalities. That is a totally different disorder called MPD. A person with schizophrenia is usually severely paranoid they do hear voices, and if they are in a psychotic state, they do see things.
This is a disease and has been proven that people who suffer from schizophrenia have a different brain pattern that most people. There is NO CURE, but there is several different treatments, including medication, counseling, EMDR etc. There is also no place to put these people because of the Geroldo Act. wich passed about 10 years ago. Therefore 90% of your homeless people are actually schizopherenics. I hope this helps.

Some people do think that psychics and mediums are mentally ill. Just ask an atheist what they think about it... It's all a matter of how well a person is able to function on their own and how they relate to others and behave that determines their mental health. Edgar Cayce was said to be very mentally disturbed... But yet, he is called a genius by a certain few called the lunitic fringe by others....
Same with John Nash... He actually was unfortunate enough to be both a genius and also schitzophrenic.
There is a school of thought that says the Angels teach the wisdom of men to men through a few select choice men.
Most of which go insane after being touched... Newton, Pagannini, Michangelo, Gallelio. The list is too large to fit here... So I do know what you mean...
Many schizophrenics cannot function in reality because they have no proper sense of reality. Now how can that be seen as either healthy or a gift? I do see what you mean though because there are parts of reality that are not obvious to a common minded man... and it can be possible that someone who seemingly exihibts a mental illness to actually be in touch with those forces... but it's not common... not at all.
Im sure that some would have found King Solomon to be rather disturbed as his claim was that infernals charged and commissioned the construction of his palace. He supposedly controlled them by the use of a sacred language and by the seals on his ring.
There was a comedian that did a skit on this question once...
Where the homeless people in NYC are reluctant Prophets trying to escape the voice of God rather than just talking to themselves... It is hysterical... but not probable.
Schizophrenics hear voices because they are split. and can't understand how the voices inside their heads are their own. They attribute these same inner dialogs that we all have to someone other than and outside themselves. That is it and that is all and to attribute it to any higher power or blessing in disguise is foolish to assume, and dangerous to the mental health and well being of the patient.
Common sense determines the outlook I suppose?
If you knew someone to be severly schitzophrenic and used them to tell the future because a few of the things they had to say seemed to prophetic... I would worry about your mental state and condition more so than theirs.

I have long thought that this is the case. I am not saying everyone who is labelled schizophrenic is clairvoyant, but I think the vast majority have a connection with the spirit world and that this could possibly be in the form of bad spirits, although not all. There are spirits of the lower entity who will attach themselves to those who are vulnerable, depressed, negative. This has been proved as the NHS fund and provide therapists to deal with spirit attachment - I only found this out recently. It is far too easy for psychiatrists to label someone as mentally ill and then the label sticks with them always and they go round in ever decreasing circles. I have experience of both - I did a degree which was Community and Mental Health and I am also a Spiritualist Medium. It is far too easy to label these people and give them pills to pop. At least the recognition by the Health Service that spirits exist is a step in the right direction. NOTE TO JUDE - I am not 'faking it' or mentally ill. What proof do you have that what I do does not exist? I have absolute proof that it does.

I have interacted over the years with both schizophrenics and people who also "heard voices" and were quite functional in every way.
The first answer is quite valid. Some people are just "well connected" and advanced enough to "hear" beings from other dimensions. In a culture as corrupt and materialistic as ours, the thought of such abilities is threatening, and thus unacceptable. Thus, those in charge will do what they can to marginalize and repress such activities.
"True" schizophrenics, on the other hand, seem to be at rather loose ends, functionally, in dealing with their lives and talents in "productive" ways. But, after all, it's all a matter of degree and perspective. And, of course"productive" in a shallow and toxic culture should not be the "benchmark" on that point. I would presume the schizophrenics have a bit of a mixture involving real voices, and those that are products of their "delusions/ auditory hallucinations".
Many of them were very talented artists, and very intelligent, sensitive and kindly people. Not something i can say for the highly productive wealthy CEO types i had the unpleasure of having to deal with over the decades :))

'Hearing voices' isn't really the main problem with schizophrenia (though I'm sure it's far from pleasant). The problem is not being able to differentiate between what's real and what's not- i.e. knowing that these voices are just the sufferer's own thoughts, perceived by their mind as something external.
Your question is an interesting one, though- one that could be discussed here as much as it could in a religious category. Was Joan of Arc simply mentally ill or did 'god' talk to her? Thousands of religious people believe that they are guided or even spoken to by a higher being- they choose to believe that what they hear (i.e. their thoughts- if no-one else can hear them then it's not technically a sound at all) is god, or whoever.
I believe in more than the physical world, but I draw the line at the thought of a god who concerns itself with talking to insignificant individuals. Why bother when he / she / it can supposedly change the universe in the blink of an eye?
PS: Shell- '90% of your homeless people are schizophrenic'!??? Can you supply a link to where you found that statistic please?

First, no longer all schizophrenics have hallucinations. There are 3 styles of schizophrenia, in ordinary terms one many times adventure auditory or seen hallucinations. 2nd, blindness and deafness have diverse motives. based an what the reason for the incapacity is a individual ought to adventure hallucinations. as an occasion, if blindness is as a results of the optical nerve than the component of the innovations that tactics seen indicators remains intact and ought to offer hallucinations.

God question. My mother has schizophrenia - and yes she behaves oddly but she is also very intuitive and clairvoyant. She can sense when someone in her family is struggling over something. Its very eerie. My sister was being bullied at work and my mum said that she felt that people were "pushing my sister around". Then she found out about my sisters problems at work.
SHell, i didnt see anyone mention that schizophrenia involved having two or more personalities. But i did only skim read

Schizophrenia is a very serious medical condition and needs to be treated as such. Ignoring or pretending it's not real doesn't make it go away, and doesn't help those suffering from this distressing and awful illness.
And as for so called 'mediums' they're either faking it or are indeed mentally ill.

the difference is the balance, one has it and the other doesn't. but to imagine that they really do hear voices form a higher source makes every bit of paranoia seem real, and in today's world the less people know the better they feel. when really their just hiding from fear.

The voices schizophrenics hear are from their own self monitoring system. We all have ongoing thoughts but these people hear them as coming from OUTSIDE as opposed to inner thoughts. Their self monitoring system doesn't tell them that these are inner voices. The "outside" style voices they hear are often disturbed because their psyche is overrun by hallucinations and delusions but some have nice voices too.
