I'm sure you could get very good quality ones that do the trick, I have one that I bought for £9 and it's not brilliant because my hair always ends up wet at the ends.

I've never had a cap keep my hair dry. I use one because my hair is very long, and some pool facilities require keeping long hair bound while swimming and it's the easiest way. I gave up on silicone and the like because of discomfort and it wasn't helping keep my hair dry at all anyway, and switched to a lycra one. Obviously, those soak right through, but they are FAR mor comfortable and I rub Ultraswim conditioner in my hair beforehand to help protect my hair from the chlorine. I've been doing this for five years and my hair is not the least bit different than before I started swimming.

Yes they do somewhat on top of your head, Thats with one plain cap that most people wear. There are ways to be more watertight. Theres no such thing as a water tight swim cap however thats not a bit snug fitting. Also some people plop a cap on dont put their hair up under it good think only a couple types of caps exist, they will always be wetheads.

I have never actually had my cap keep my hair dry, although I wear one for streamlining purposes. Maybe some are designed to keep your hair dry, but I don't think the competitive swimming type are.

I agree with compost4, my hair never stays dry, but then I only use them for competitive swimming. Are there different types of caps?

I haven't used one in so long... but I remember they did keep most of your hair dry. Although your dry hair will look funny after taking of the cap.

They should, but if you have a lot of hair it can poke out the bottom of the cap.
Remember you should still wash your hair after swimming, even if you do have a cap, to get the smell of chlorine out.

more or less. But you should wear one anyway... think of all the sprays and gels people put in their hair which only comes off after a few lengths in the pool.
furthermore, it's nasty to swim and get other peoples hair on you as you go.
