I was just watching a show yesterday that said as long as you use a silicon base before applying foundation, it doesn't really matter the brand of foundation you use. They suggested Chanel Base Lumiere. It is suppose to give a good, even base to apply the foundation. I haven't tried it yet, but when I find the product, I will try it out.

I can sing all day about the Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse foundation. Seriously, it's that good. It doesn't cause any breakouts at all (well one or two that occur monthly have nothing to do with the foundation, and you know what I'm talking about!), and it's so lightweight it hardly feels like you have anything on your face!!! It's a great steal at only $5-$6 and can be found at CVS, Eckerd, Walmart, pretty much anywhere! The product comes in a little glass jar with a wavy plastic cover. Start with a clean, well-moisturized face (since this product does dry to a matte finish, and if you have dry skin it will probably do nothing for your dry spots unless you moisturize beforehand!). Next, lightly dip your fingers in the jar and scoop out a very small amount of foundation. Using light gentle strokes, pat on the foundation working your way inside out (from nose towards hairline) and be sure to blend well to avoid streaking or an obvious line around your face. You don't even need to set this with a powder since it dries to one anyway! There is no "best way" to apply foundation. I find working with my fingers gives me optimum results. You can try working with your fingers or slightly dampening a sponge and using that instead (just run the sponge under water, squeeze out excess, use your finger to pat on foundation on face, and blend using the damp sponge). Hope that helps :)

I don't personally wear foundation, but I'd suggest you do some asking around at cosmetic counters and such as that for an affordable brand that has the smallest risk for oxidization (that gross orange colorization that occurs after a few minutes). Typically, most drug store brands are going to have that happen if you need a medium or darker shade.
Also, if you have sensitive skin, instead of thick, heavy liquids, try to opt for a thin pressed or loose powder. Those also work better with oily skin. Various beauty supply stores should have a multitude of brands for you to try and can probably give you more info on it as a result from feedback of their costumers.
My personal option has been to skip foundation as a whole because it just caused breakout after breakout. I just put on a SMALL amount of emollient, like Vaseline, on my face before I apply concealer. It kind of gives you a healthy glow if you don't apply too much. Then continue with highlighter or bronzer , whichever you prefer, along your contour areas. Then the continue with your normal routine with eyeshadow, mascara, etc. I get compliments often on how healthy and natural my skin/makeup looks.
***If you ever use Vaseline on your face, don't sleep with it on over night.

Moisturize your face first, then apply your foundation. I'm using Cover Girl right now, but why not try one of the complexion matching brands they have out now?? It may boost your confidence in foundation.

Always use the least amount of coverage that you can stand and then fill in parts that you want extra coverage with a concealer and set with a powder...this is how you will get the most finished, polished look...as far as application you want to put it on the center of you face and blend outward...never put foundation on the jawline because it will give you a mask...

Try Bare Minerals by Bare Escentuals. Its so easy and natural looking. All you have to do is brush it onto your face. I suggest using a light moisturizer before using any foundation. Using a sponge or even a brush with any foundation will help you blend it evenly.

Maybelline EverFresh is the best foundation, applied with (clean!) fingers from the centre of the face outwards in little dabs is the best (and most hygenic way)

always go natural if possible , but if you must , dab on a little bit of a concealer stick onto your flaws , blend , then get a powdered compact that matches your skin tone and aply with a BRUSH NOT A PAD so you can avoid nasty jaw lines and it will blend into your skin a lot better and create a more natural look.... o , i prefer covergirl

Unless your skin is seriously flawed, I'd avoid foundation if I were you. If I had it to do over, I'd never have touched it. It changes your skin and you become hooked on "flawless" rather than enjoying good, healthy, if not entirely perfect skin.
