I need character dance shoes for a musical I'm going to be in and I don't know what size shoe I need to buy. I looked on ebay and people were saying I'd need a size bigger or smaller or the same as my street shoe size. Is there a difference from brand to brand with the size variation? How much bigger or smaller of a size than my street shoe do I need, if there is any difference at all?

It really depends on where you buy the shoes and what brand they are. I wouldn't buy it off of Ebay -- it's so hard to buy a shoe without knowing how it will fit and how comfortable or uncomfortable it will be. My character shoes are a size smaller than my normal shoes (I'm usually an 8 and I can get away with a 6 and a half or a 7 in my character shoes), but it really depends on the brand.

Good luck with your musical -- hope this helps you!

It all depends on the brand you get and somtimes it varies from place to place. I wear an 8 or 8 1/2 and my character shoes are a 6 1/2. They are the Sansha brand. Check to see if there is a local dance shop near you that would be the best place so you can actually try on a pair before buying them. Wherever you are going to buy them from I would look on the webstie or a catalog at the sizing charts and see what they say you should get. They dont always work for everybody but that would be a good place to start. If they dont fit just send them back. Most places are really good about letting you send back shoes. Some places that I have had good success with is:
www.discountdance.com
www.justforkix.com
www.allaboutdance.com
www.dancedistrubutors.com
www.dancewearhouse.com.
Hope I helped! Good Luck for your musical!

Every brand runs differently, but I've noticed for most brands that the character shoe is about one size larger than your street shoe. That is, if your street shoe size is a 7, then the character shoe size is an 8. However, I do buy my shoes slightly bigger than most people so that I can grow into them and so that they'll last me for a few years. If you're ordering from ebay, go for a size larger. You can always add heel inserts if the shoes are too big, but if they're too small, you'll have to return them.

I agree with the other posters--it depends on what type of shoes, which brand, etc.
I've previously ordered from Discount Dance Supply and Dance Distributors. Both have very good return policies, and if you call them, rather than ordering online, their customer service reps can generally advise you on what size you need. Then, once they arrive, just be sure to try them on ONLY ON A CARPETED SURFACE! Once you've worn them and they start to show any scratches or signs of use they will not accep them for return.
Bear in mind that any shoe made of leather will loosen up and stretch a bit as you wear it.

Best of luck with your show! Or should I say break a leg? :)

You should get you character shoes through Discount Dance Supply, Just For Kix, and or Dance Distributors. As for sizing I think you should go with the same size as your dress shoes.
That is the size I went with to get my character shoes. I hope that I helped you out.
