I do hope that you realize that Alcatraz is in San Francisco and not San Diego. While I assume that you just meant to put this in the San Francisco category, I would hate for you to be dreadfully disappointed when you arrive in San Diego only to find that Alcatraz is 9 hours away!

Go during the day. I visited Alcatraz about 4 years ago, and there is a bit of walking to do to actually get up to the jail, so it would be easier to go at night. Plus, I don't know how well lit the place is, seeing how long ago it was built, so I recommend going during the day.

It's better in the day. I've been there twice and it's way more fun when it's warm and you can actually see everything.
