Any chance you can avoid putting down a hard surface? They've been shown to contribute to local flooding in rainfalls, and garden designers are starting to try design so as to have surfaces (like your muddy dog area) that allow water to soak in and drain naturally.
Is the mucky dog muck/poo in which case, can you train your dog to go in a certain area? The training itself shouldn't take very long at all, provided you've cleaned up all the other areas, and lead him/her to the area regularly, praising when he "goes".
If it's because of mud, then don't forget, summer, and drought is almost here!

If the dog is back there all the time tearing it up you could use gravel or stones. If he's just tearing it up from playing you could always grow a new healthy lawn that could tolerate the abuse of 4 playful paws. Gravel will be much less harmful to your pooches paws though if he's playing on stone he might wear down his paw pads.

You can buy plastic dog loos which are a plastic bin with small holes and a lid and you set into your soil and scoop up all the poop and then sprinkle the special liquid which comes with it onto it. It they bio degrade down into the soil. This way you can still retain your garden.

Slabs are good but can become smelly in hot weather and should be sealed to stop the urine from discolouring them. My daughters have had stones-- I think it`s called pea gravel (honest thats not a joke). Its easy to clean and they rake it to keep it fresh. it works with their 3 dogs. Occasionally they put Jeyes fluid in a watering can to rinse it but the dogs must be kept away from it then until it drys.

Could you rephrase the question? Is your dog making your small garden mucky? Do want ideas to improve your small backyard garden? What does the dog have to do with it? Is your dog doing his business in your garden? Take him some place else.
