how do you get rid of standing water in a back yard?

i have standing water in my back yard near the fence which is chain link fencing. my neighbors on each side do not have this problem. what can i do to rid myself of this problem

You have one of two problems, either you are lower than you neighbors, or you have allot of clay in the ground. If you are lower you can bring in some top soil and build it up just remember you cannot go higher than you neighbors yards or you will flood their yards and that causes more problems. You can pump it out but that is a band aid and not a fix. If you have allot of clay then you need to get some gypsum to break up the clay and allow for drainage. You can buy it at any nursery, or home improvement center. Hope this helps.

Best way it to install a french drain system. Choose the slope line where the water tends to come from or go to. Then choose the area where you want to water to go. Call 8-11 and then either get a mini excavator or dig by hand a long 1' x 2' deep trench. This trench should run across the entire area where water tends to surface and connect to the area where you want the water to go (this is where you end the trench). At the end of the trench, dig a large hole that is at least 4' x 4.' Now fill the 1' x 2' deep trench with 6 inches of gravel. Do not fill the 4' x 4' trench yet. Go to your local home supply store and get enough perforated pipe to lay and connect in your long trench. Make sure you have a way to vent it too so air can flow through the pipe when it's covered. Remember that your pipe must be slightly sloped when it goes into the trench for the water to drain to the larger hole trench. With perforated pipe in place, fill the rest of the long trench with gravel and fill the hole trench completely with gravel. Cover with sod or sand for a decent look. If your yard is grass go ahead and plant it. Any decent looking covering with good drainage should be your final step.

If you have to use a water pump, it sounds like you could have a lot of water. One way to fix it, which will be the most labor intensive, is to dig down a little, pur some crushed gravel and lay some drainage pipe. This pipe will have holes in it to allow the water in. You will have to dig a trench from where the water is standing to where you want it to run off. Cover the pipe with more gravel, then top it with topsoil. Tamp it down and mound it slightly. Put down grass seed, or sod and that should take care of it.

My husband and I also have this recurring problem. We bought a water pump from Lowe's hardware store to pump the water out of the back yard and into the front street to drain. We tried building the ground level up but that didn't work for us. The pump is annoying but so far, it is the most effective.

John is correct, but I just dug a trench and filled it with stones and topped it off with soil and turf. It won't last as long as doing it properly but it is quicker and cheaper. Also once you see how well it is working you will be encouraged to do it properly next time with pipes and permeable membranes for a permanent job.

david is pretty close except for the mound it up.. unless he means mound it up so it will settle flat which is fine.. its called a french drain. you just need it to fall from high to low. low being where the water will exit the yard. another way is to rent a post hole digger with a large blade. most of these are attached to tractors or bobcats. drill the holes and fill with gravel and top with soil

Plant a weeping willow, they love water, and once they grow big like in 3 or 4 years they will suck up all the water and you wont have that problem. Maybe less time if u get an older weeping willow

Evidently your lawn is lower then theirs. You can spread a layer of Top Soil on it and spread it out. This is a good time of year to do it, and go ahead and throw some grass seed on it and cover it with straw.

Take a bucket, pick up all of the water, and vaporize it. Keep doing that until the problem goes away.

Or you could murder your neighbors, and use their bodies to absorb it.
