1. The Populist Party sought to reform social injustices among farmers and westerns in general.
2. The Second Industrial Revolution which began following the Civil War led to the overworking of the laborers, the abuse of immigrants, the employment of children, the worsening of work conditions, and the underpaying of women. While all of this was going on the wealthy got wealthier. This is the time period Mark Twain referred to as "The Gilded Age."
3. While this was taking place a movement began called the Social Gospel movement in which SOME of the wealthy felt they should use their wealth to better society in some way. Andrew Carnegie was one of the leading proponents of this school of thought.
4. Soon journalists began to expose these evils and ills in society through their muckraking pieces. This led to social outrage and social change known as the Progressive Era.

And there you have it.

Progressivism was the response of various groups to problems raised by the rapid industrialization and urbanization that followed the Civil War. These problems included the spread of slums and poverty; the exploitation of labour; the breakdown of democratic government in the cities and states caused by the emergence of political organizations, or machines, allied with business interests; and a rapid movement toward financial and industrial concentration. Many Americans feared that their historic traditions of responsible democratic government and free economic opportunity for all were being destroyed by gigantic combinations of economic and political power.
