Human beings are uniquely created with very powerful, imaginitive minds. That means that when you watch a horror movie, it can trigger you to over-react to the sounds of the night, including creaks of the house setting or your pet scurrying through the house.
That being said...
I think it's a highly personal matter whether someone is able to watch a horror movie before bed or not; some people can manage to watch one without any lingering fear or anxiety and can sleep peacefully. However, there are many people who later on can't get the violent, disturbing images out of their minds, and every little shadow and sound around them manifests itself as something from the horror movie.

It depends on how used to them you are.
I watched PARTS of Silence of the Lambs once (kept flipping away, then flipping back), late.
I was freaked, and watched comedies for a couple of hours before even THINKING about turning off the lights and trying to go to sleep.
(As a kid I was kept awake by a couple of movies, too.)
When I first started watching Buffy I decided I better not watch it last thing before bed.
But now that I've seen the whole thing several times, it doesn't bother me.
But I don't care for horrory stuff in general, so I don't watch them.
Knowing what a scaredy I am, even if I did watch something, I would watch other things after, to get it out of my mind before trying to sleep.
I have no desire to watch the stuff I've been seeing advertised on TV.
I like movies that have plot, script, character, dialog -- not junk that's all about gore and yucko garbage.
A light would be irrelevant, since it's the dreams I'm trying to avoid.
That's why I'd watch light things -- so I don't go to sleep with horror on the brain.

The kinds of things that bother me in horror movies are the kinds that are based on the things that are real in life...
I personally believe in an alternate universe that is inhabited by things that we don't all possess the ability to see or interact with or understand...
therefore... Something like Saw... Doesn't do it for me.
Constantine, Fallen, Emily Rose, Silent hill and Thirteen Ghosts... Disturbed me to the marrow... Still do!
I still can't hear The Rolling Stones, "Time is on my side." without thinking of Azazel...
No need for the light on... but a lot of fear and trepidation for at least a week or two afterward.
Especially when you wake up at 3:00 am, forgetting that you filled your bladder with soda and water during the Exorcisim of Emily Rose.
Ever since that movie... Something about 3:00 am... just does me in!

Not now that I'm an adult. But you do retain those movie scenes and some of them will enter your dreams when you have a bad night or your body is stressed. Everything that goes in is there but it might never be seen again. It is all randomly chosen by your subconscious, so take your chances. If it's anything you can't stomach, leave it. It's not worth recording upstairs. @8-]

Eeek. Ever since I watched like 5 horror movies in a day like a few months ago, I felt all like paranoid that something was coming to get me, I still havent gotten over that. I'm even scared of flushing my toilet.. I have to sleep with my lights on, even when I do that I start hallucinating and stuff. I never want to watch a scary movie again

For little kids that believe what they see on TV, absolutely not. I was scared when I was a little kid because I could imagine all sorts of things. Once I understood that I was not scared of the dark but what might be in the dark, it helped. It got all better when I knew without a doubt that God loved me and He and His angels protect us then I could walk anywhere in the dark. Mmm

i used to be scared by horror movies and avoid them at all. But now I dstance myself from fear and I saw recently "Dracula" It amuses me the special effects expected to provoke fear. I also saw recently "Eraserhead" and people commented" what if you will remember it at night" .I thought that its a ridiculous comment \BUT indeed some images came to my mind at night time. Not pleasant images.
