The Verde Island Passage is located in Southern Luzon, and is off the beaten path of ecotourism in the Philippines. It's been recently declared as the most diverse reef in the world, sort of like the Amazon Forest of the Ocean. The island has a couple of simple resorts catering mostly to divers and some tourists as well.

About one hour away is Puerto Galera in Mindoro Island which is a destination must for divers all over the world as well as beach combers from as far away as europe. Some parts of it are already overdeveloped but its still a great place to visit. You'll still find your own quiet little paradise, and great hiking is just meters from the shoreline as the the shores shortly roll into great mountainous forests with scattered fresh spring waterfalls.

No worries about terror threats here. Come and visit. I'm sure you'll fall in love with these places.

try to google earth these places to see for yourself.

Cheers!

You can try visiting these places. If you're hesitant about Southern Philippines, then Northern and Central Philippines is the place for you... he he. But the places i'd recommend there are not by the water...

- Banawe Rice Terraces
- Sagada (to see the hanging coffins)
- Bohol (to see the Chocolate Hills)
- Vigan, Ilocos Sur (a historic, spanish architecture and all)

I just got back from my trip to Puerto Princesa, Palawan. First hand info. This is the place to go . Many things to see and do, like Underground River, Island Hopping, Estrella Falls plus others. No terrorists there!

You know what? CDOGuide is right! that's why don't trust this fool pull's back his own fellowmen just to trust him! i think he's a tour guide, but he's words must not be taken seriously. Just imagine filipino who pulls back other filipinos just to have work? He might took advantage of your visit... there are lots of beautiful places in manila. all that was said by other answerer where true but i suggest if you really want to enjoy your stay, better go to Palawan. a lot of excitement awaits you there.

You heard? Well as I say "second hand information kills", you better ask people who have lived in those islands or have visited the area. A lot of local Filipinos, mostly in Luzon region "exaggerate" stories even though they themselves have not set foot in any southern Philippine province. Like you, they just base their information on news that are out-dated. It is funny that some foreigners who are now living in southern Philippines find it safer than in their respective countries. Please remember that southern Philippines (Mindanao Island including other outlaying islands) is as big as South Korea or Portugal.

The islands of Basilan, Tawi Tawi and Sulu (southern most islands near Malaysia) are not recommended for travel unless under government official duty. Currently there are military exercises (both American and Philippine army) on those islands.

The Tubattaha Reefs near Palawan is the best in the Philippines. In fact it has been declared a World Heritage site by the United Nations. Palawan Island-Province is the best place to snorkel, dive in world war II wrecks and hike around. The place is not that yet commercialized though there might be more people this April and May as it is the Philippine summer season. El Nido, Palawan was the venue of the Amazing Race season 5.

I can suggest some nice places that I've been before:
-Camiguin Island & white Island
-Moalboal, Cebu,
-Badian beach & Kawasan Falls
-Mactan Marine Sanctuary
-Bantayan Island, Cebu & Virgin Island
-Cagayan De Oro City
-Bohol (Panglao Island & Balicasag Island)
-Apo Island, Dauin, ****** Oriental
-Camotes Island
-Palawan
-Batangas beaches
Most place I've mention got nice white sand beaches, & nice marine sanctuaries that are good for divers & snorkellers. Then some are nice for excursions.
Just buy the Lonely Planet (Philippines) Travel book.
It's very helpful for travellers.
Good luck! (--,)

and oh for some places in Asia: I think Thailand. They have nice beaches & tourist spots too. (--,)
