I have a tan suede coat that was $100. Cheap, so I just threw it in the washer on regular and let it dry on high heat for 10 minutes for the wrinkles and lint. Then took it out to air dry! It had a three inch ink stain,(I sat on a pen in the car and didn't know it until we got home) I put some liquid tide on it scrubbed the spot gently with my fingers threw it in the wash and the ink was gone when it come out of the wash. I have washed it 4-5 times within the last 2 years and I don't wear it often.
As far as before modern tech, if people had suede I think that they would have a leather shop or professional cleaners take care of it. Modern tech has been around for a while, So, I assume you would have had to of had some money to own suede and only in the last 10 years become popular with clothing, shoes and furniture.

It's funny you asked this, you saw my messy room question and then I saw your suede question. When I lived in Southern England in Sussex some very nice gentlemen at the corner repair shoppe showed me how they did it. You get a very stiff brush and can brush away most stains. This will not clean the lining but you CAN clean an awful lot of suede this way. I was walking back to Brighton one day when I noticed not one but three stains on my favorite suede coat! I went into that shop and voila they brushed them away with something that looks like a toothbrush but stiff and wiry. Then they sold me the tool itself for some ridiculously cheap price. I still have it today and keep it both for its practical use and for memories of a better time.

Unless it's a washable jacket (check the care label) it's best to take it to a dry cleaner. It is a lot more expensive because it must be done by a leather/suede dry cleaning process, which is different than regular dry cleaning. I was a dry cleaner for twelve years and we used to send our leather/suede garments out to a specialist. We charged our customers $17 to $27 for jackets. I would call around and get different prices. Prices vary based upon whether it's full or partial leather or suede and the length of the garment.
