I can speak about going North as I am from Burlington, VT. The weather here, can be completely unpredictable as it can in most places. This past winter we've had 30 degree tempuratures one day and temps in the single digits or below 0 the next. We've had so much snow that basically the entire state was at a standstill for a day while we AL had to dig ourselves out. Unless you go to a really small town, Vermont is not a cheap place to live. Property taxes are quite high if you plan on owning a home. If you choose to rent, I would probably stay away from the greater Burlington area as the only places that are cheap are dumps that have long been destroyed by convoys of college students over the years.

Yes, Vermont is a beautiful state with Lake Champlain and all the trees. You will find lots of farmer's markets and various events across the state. Burlington is a great place for music as we have many local bands and talent from all over the country come here. It's a good location. We're not far from Montreal or Boston, two fantastic metropolitan areas. And we have a very diverse community, which makes for meeting interesting people.

I don't know much about North Carolina, but I can give you some advice about choosing a place to go for retirement. You see, my parents did this, and went about the wrong way to do this. I would say go to different areas around both states to figure out where you might like to live. Through consecutive places, narrow down your choices to two or three places. Then start taking longer trips, up to staying in a particular location for two months or more. This will give you a clear picture of what it would be like to live in that area. You may or may not like the area you'd tentitively chosen. Once you find the place you like, and the lifestyle of the area suits you, go ahead and make your plans for retirement.

Good luck!

VT versus NC is a big difference in winter weather. And the Carolina's are becoming increasingly overpopulated. You may want to check into things like property tax, climate, population... before you decide.

Though I don't really consider North Carolina to be "south," it's a much better retirement location in terms of climate! There are even more attractive locations, though - Florida and Texas among others. And state income tax should be a major factor, as someone else noted.
