because they cant see what is happening around them in the dark. I am not sure why monsters though. I was never afraid of them. I always thought if I met one I would befriend it.
I hate basements though still to this day. they are all creepy for some reason.

For me, the reason was I watched too many horror shows when I was young. There used to be a program on called "Saturday Afternoon Creature Feature" and they showed a horror movie every Sat. afternoon.
I learned to love Hitchcock films but they sure scared the bejesus out of me when I was young.
