Mine was supposed to be every year as long as there were no complaints. That usually ended up being more like 18 months because the inspection staff was underfunded and overworked, and I always passed the surprise inspection with flying colors, so I was low-priority.

And when I go out to eat now, I try to peek around a bit and see what I can see, but I don't ask to see the kitchen.

My answer to this question would have to be I don't want to think about it.

1. They probable don't have enough inspector's to cover the area of rest. that there are.

2. If we knew what went on behind closed door's we would probable never eat out again.

3. I would say the old saying goes you get what you pay for. If it is a price is high chances are your getting a nice place that take's care of their food. The cheaper they are the more they will try to save.

I worked in a small rest that used stale bread and if you ordered toast the server's would give them customer's the moldy and stale out of date bread. The owner would also come in and have the employees cut mold off the cheese danish and put them up for sale again the next day. Stuff like the side's beet's , bean's slaw, they had roache's running in it cause it sat out.

I try not to eat in diner's they seem to be the dirtiest from my experiance as a server. You can also ask your server most will be honest if they seem to trust you. They will recomend what is cleanest. Fast food seem's to be even cleaner then a diner would be. And be sure to check your own food. Don't just assume it is fresh. Look at your bread, smell your food, be your own inspector. If you order shrimp. Does it look nice and red and clean or is it getting a brownish color. Don't assume because they are in the food business they are looking out for your food. They are trying to save money. They are in a business and that is exactly how they treat it.

A tip: Do the same when you shop at a food store. Check your meat's and date's. If you buy a steak does it look fresh.

If you see something wrong you can report it and osha will inspect. I have done it many time's at place's I have worked. And it's not known who reported it and they do send inspector's right away.

When I eat out I go to nice resturant's stay away from diner's. Good Luck with this one. Good Question. !!!!

If you are relaly worried about it, try checking your state's health department website & see if the restaurant you are interested in has any really horrible offenses. That is the best way to be sure you are goign somewhere clean. Honestly, how often I think depends on the kind of restaurant & the state.
