Hi, animalsr!

Your question sparked a furious and heated debate between my wife and me as to whether the Coriolis Effect was strong enough to cause water in toilets to rotate in opposite directions in the north and south hemispheres.

Please see the reference below for a complete and interesting article on the Coriolis Effect.

The first answer you got was correct - the rotation of the water in a toilet bowl is caused by the direction the jets around the edge of the toilet bowl are pointed. The point of a toilet bowl is to flush away icky bits, so a strong jet that causes rotation flushes better than jets that point straight down.
personally,as far as sinks and tubs go, I remember as a kid trying to get the water to drain out of the tub in the opposite direction by manually reversing the vortex, only to watch it stop and return to the same direction again.Puzzling.Ps my wife says I'm nutzzzzzzz.
i hope you find these answers helpful. Barney

this has been answered before the water spins because the holes in the rim point clockwise or counterclockwise. The toilet is too small for its spin to be affected by any force except gravity
