Why do tears come down when I say " The Lord's prayer?
I'm not a religious person and never was. I am not a fanatic or a new-born Christian either. I'm not an atheist. I believe in God and the universal brotherhood of mankind, but that is it! How would you explain this?

I cannot help it! I can't even continue sometimes. I need to stop and get my emotions under control and I look like a fool... I feel like it rather.

No preaching please.

You cry when you say "The Lord's Prayer", because you are feeling what you are saying. You are emotionally feeling the prayer, even thought you may not physically be feeling it. Also, you may just get in touch with another side of you that you never knew about. So, don't think you are a fool because you cry, embrace the fact that you are feeling it when you pray, and maybe, just maybe, you crying is a sign saying that God has understood your prayer. You don't need to get your emotions under control, because you have perfect control over them. Sometimes, it's just good to let them go, even if you don't know that you're the one that is letting them go.

I have sobbed through some hymns in church (in my church going days). I still get misty eyed over hymns and prayer. I can be driving in my car or watching a movie with religious overtones and tear up. I have been told that I am an HSP, 'highly sensitive person,' and tend toward the more 'feeling' side of life. There is actually a book out on the subject! This same person explained that it is a scientifically/psychologically proven fact that some people tend toward FEELINGS and many are totally oriented toward LOGIC! amazing, huh? Often when the logical types are asked about how they feel about something, they look perplexed and matter-of-fact. They may shrug and say something like..."I don't feel anything about it...I think we need to take action in a practical way to solve the problem...what is there to feel anything about?" Duh! In their defense, though, they are the folks that came up with the technology that has gone into the computer I am working on. They have other strengths! And I'm not saying they don't feel at all, but that feelings are less apparent...not close to the surface. After I started paying attention to responses from different people, I was amazed to find that our inner life can be totally different from one another and it happens at birth!!! And so, you are a feeling person and I think that is great! Don't ever change, baby! (As Elvis used to say!) Ha. However, having said this...there is more. We 'feeling types' can suffer, sometimes, more than necessary. To hear a lovely hymn or say a beautiful prayer, and cry, shows your humanity and how wonderful that is. Oh, and crying, even sobbing sometimes is so REAL, so honest. We cried our eyes out when we were children...even in public!! What happen to us as adults. We are embarressed to cry. What's wrong with this picture?! For me, personally...I have to keep a rein on how my mind as it can feed into my emotions and get carried away. That can lead to more crying than necessary! The mind is great at drudgeing up all kinds of memories, etc. to get the crying going...gotta pay attention to that. Well, I've gone off the subject! Just be glad you are so sweet, that you have such deep feelings. Wouldn't our world be a great place if every body cared a little more and cried in public! I think so!

No preaching ... just some facts. I believe by the Lord's prayer you are refering to Matthew 6 beginning with verse 9. This is not the Lord's prayer. In verse 8 Jesus says ''Pray ye after this manner..." This prayer, which many have refered to as the Lord's prayer, is an example prayer he taught the disciples. If you will read John 17, this whole chapter is Jesus praying to God about unity.

The emotions you feel as you recite Matthew 6 are normal. Watching a happy or sad movie has the same affect. I am not a religious person myself, I'm agnostic, but there are parts of the Bible which make me sad as well. Yes, I have read the whole Bible, cover to cover. When I read about Jesus being whipped and mocked and hung on a cross it always makes me sad. The book of Job makes me sad. The book of Jonah gives me a mix of emotions. Revelations scares the crap out of me.

What you are feeling is normal. You don't have to be a prison guard to sympathize with a prisoner being rapes and beaten. You don't have to be a doctor to understand the pain a patient with cancer is having. You don't have to be a parent to be enraged about someone killing a child. Emotions cover a vast variety of topics. It's good that you recognize the importance of this prayer and it's meaning has not escaped you. Your tears are in fact a sign of your good nature and forgiving soul. Be happy that something like this has profoundly affected you. I know many pious people who read this scripture as if they were reading from a phone book. So I'm not sure if they even grasp the meaning of it.

Well maybe because you feel the lord in you when you pray .. well I am not religious I actually fall asleep when I pray at church when I have to go (no offense to anyone) but I am guessing that the lord is touching you in away that makes you cry. I have heard that before somewhere.

Many times that happens to me too. I am NOT religious anymore & I think it's part GUILT, part WISTFULNESS, part WISHFULNESS --it just kinda makes me feel like there might be someone there to take care of me & all my troubles....it's hard to explain.

I don't like all that weakness--makes me feel weak & vulnerable & stupid because I know I only have **ME** to take care of me & mine, so I usually avoid too much prayer.

BTW, I'm AGNOSTIC--not sure WHAT to believe anymore.

Something else, I have bad insomnia & about 99.9% of the time, (when I can remember to do it), saying the Lord's Prayer several times will put me to sleep by the 2nd or 3rd time!!!

My best guess is that when you're crying, you feel hopeless, like nobody can help you or comfort you... so you pray to God since he's the only person left, somebody who won't judge you, and so on. That's my best guess, and I'm sorry if I'm sounding preachy or this answer is totally off. XD I'm actually an atheist myself.

I don't know much else about your life but I would guess you are a sad or depressed person... You have probably been through alot of hard times.I think you cry because you 'feel' it when your saying it.Meaning you desperately want/need someone to care for and watch over you.

Because even though you aren't religious it touches you in some way. It has happened to me before and I'm not particularly religious either---i'm not atheist either. I just don't really have a religious preference.

We're in deep thoughts and emotion. We're all touched by the Lord's grace on the blessing He had given to us.
