The question is debatable.

In proper theory, so long as you legally own that DVD, you can do whatever you see fit and view the material on whatever support you like.

However, as Coragryph noted, the DMCA makes it illegal to bypass the encryption,a step necessary if you want to rip the DVD to transfer the content to, say, that ipod...

I do not know if jurisprudence has tackled the issue yet and given a proper decision whether the DMCA can really impose such limitations on regular content owners.

In the US, in most cases, it is illegal.

Not because of standard copyright issues, but because of the Digital Millenium Copyright Act (DMCA).

Unlike music CDs, most DVDs have an encryption that blocks their direct access. Bypassing that encryption is illegal under the DMCA. So, even though you can rip a music CD for your personal use, you cannot do the same for most DVDs.

If you own the movie...it's legal. Your IPOD should accept it, but if it doesn't then you'd have to hack the coding, and that would be illegal.

You bought the movie, you can do with it as you like, as long as you do not have others pay you for viewing.
