The southern sections of the country were slave owners and the northern part were not. The north was trying to abolish slavery and the south was fighting to keep it. Lincoln was a slave owner, but he like many politicians wanted more votes and to keep his office. So he signed a bill that would abolish slavery, but he didn't think that it would pass or turn into a war over it.
But once it did, he had to stick with it as he had no choice. So Lincoln like many other politicions wasn't as great as he is portrayed now. The south won and Lincoln wasn't too happy about slavery being abolished, but that he was considered a great president and humanitarian.
Of course he was killed because people in the south were not happy about the outcome. Incidentally he murderer, John Wilkes Booth, had a brother who was a famous actor, who lived in New york City and his home is now a well known actor's club, The Players Club, off Gramery Park. It was a case of brother against brother, which was often the case during the war. Brothers, families, friends often were on both sides of fence during the Civil War.
