That is the way the automatic cancelling is designed at the post offices. Putting it in the lower left hand corner with an arrow to the right hand upper corner probably wouldn't work.

common reading has its pattern from left to right. a recipient is interested first as to who is the sender such that the same is placed at the upper left hand corner. then his view is drawn from left to right--the stamp. that's what it is. and has been adopted universally except maybe for the oriental chinese and other languages which call for a reading from right to left
