My 7 in male dovii has killed every tankmate i have put in his 55 gal tank..so i accept the fact that he must be kept alone..however now he is attacking everything that hangs in the tank..(heater,filter tube, the top of the hood, bubble blower).i also noticed he is tearing the leaves off my fake plants. I change up the caves and the scenery about once a month to keep him challenged but he is getting out of hand..i cant get a bigger tank for another couple months due to finances..any suggestions ?

It's likley this behavior will continue.

Please note that the Dovii will reach about 70cm. As such i recomend that when you do upgrade your tank (do it ASAP) you go with at least a 6x2x2ft tank.

You have little if any chance of keeping those plants, to be honest i really wouldn't bother with fake plants anyway, go with large rock work (make sure it stable as he will knock it over). Ceramic pots and large hollow drift wood logs.

As for smashing stuff i recomend that your new tank have a sump filter (i.e. a tank under the main tank that acts as your filter.) that way all the equipment i.e. heater etc is in the bottom sump tank away from your crazy dovii. Be carefull, if he manages to smash the heater (dosn't take much effort) he will electrecute himself, get a heater gaurd for now.

Also place a couple of large balls in the tank, these float and will provide him with entertainment as he nudges them around the tank. Don't use Ping pong balls as he may swallow them.

He will likely continue to do this. Your plants will never work with him. They sell heater guards that will protect the heater, just make sure the hood is in place nice and tight, weighted down if necessary. If his attacking the filter tube is becoming a problem you will need to figure out a way to protect it, perhaps with some porous foam wrapped around it. With a power filter on the tank, the aerater is optional anyway. You can also get a dividor for the tank to seperate it into two sections - one side just a couple of inches wide to put the equipment in, and the rest of the tank for the fish.

When you do get a bigger tank, make sure you get a real big one - one of these fish need 120 gallons at least.

get some mesh or plastic sheeting to seperate him from the things you dont want him destroying.

Take everything else out - he is a fish, he doesnt need them in there... he is being territorial and agressive, not playful.
