6(3L-1) + 5L = 63

L = 3 and J = 8

Let x = Larry's age
Then 3x - 1 = Jack's age
Solution:
6(3x - 1) + 5x = 63
18x - 6 + 5x = 63
18x + 5x = 63 + 6
23x = 69
x = 69/23
x = 3 (Larry's age)
3 x 3 - 1 = Jack's age
9 - 1 = Jack's age
8 = Jack's age
