I just pulled out my EGR valves and cleaned out the carbon off of it since I failed my DEQ test. Their computer said that I had problems with my Exhaust gas reciculation. I pulled that ERG, cleaned it thouroughly now is in need of reseting the "check engline" light off. Thank you .

Disconnecting the battery (NEG) for 20 to 30 minutes will turn the light off.
BUT— merely cleaning the EGR valve probably isn't the repair you might hope.
What was the code number? It could relate to flow rate, position sensor, or the control solenoid. DIAGNOSTICS are required to determine the cause of failure.
AFTER proper diagnostics and repair, and the light is turned off, you should know that your car will fail its test again if you don't allow enough driving time for the PCM to run all of its monitors. These monitors are set to "Not Ready" status every time the codes are cleared, or when the battery goes dead.
There are emissions devices on your car that are not computer components (Fuel cap, catalytic converter, EGR valve, etc.), but Federal law requires that they be tested for proper function regularly. But the car must be driven in a certain manner, for a certain period of time before these tests can be run. It can be done by a tech who knows the OBD II Drive Cycle in about 12 to 15 miles. It can take the owner as much as 300 miles to set them.

Happy Motoring

You need a basic OBD2 scanner with resetting capabilities that can be bought at any parts store for less than $100. You can buy one at some walmart, and bring it back when done...
Sometimes, disconnecting the battery for 10 min works as well but is should not so you can try but don't count on it.

what i do,is any time iam working on anything like that,i unhook the neg.terminal and after i get done,i wait for a while and then hook it back up,to clear the codes.another thing, any time your going to clean the egr valve, keep the wiring harness hooked up(you should have enough wiring to work on the egr valve, without disconnecting it)that way you wont get any codes.

Disconnect negative battery cable, turn on lights to drain voltage off computer wait one minute, turn off lights reconnect battery. Turn key to on position ( not start) wait three minutes for computer to reset, you should be able to start car without light. You will need to rest clock and radio.

Your car might be telling you something is wrong with it so have it checked. That's the purpose of the Check Engine light. You might just save yourself an expensive repair later on. If you already know what's wrong with it and it's not something that is major then go ahead and do what the first answer said.

DO NOT DISCONNECT THE RED WIRE!!!!
disconnect the negative

if You disconnect the positive will spark upon disconnection and spoil the expensive on board computer.($800.00 to $1500.00 just the part)

Disconnect the NEGATIVE battery cable. NOT POSITIVE!!

That way if the wrench touches metal it won't short out and blow up your battery in your face.
