Hello, If your going to use 3dsmax neither card mentioned above will do. I suggest you get nothing less then a nvidia 7800GTX and 2GB of ram

That's a pretty good rig for a pavilion. Your cpu is good, your ram is good for a PC made by last year. If you wanted to upgrade your computer without having to change out the majority of the insides you could invest in a new video card, and more ram (for the more easy do-it-yourself means). Reading a technical layout at HP of your PC it says you can use an AGP video card, and 184pin DDR ram.

(Video card would have to be an AGP card, not PCI-E. Thereby, the highest range AGP card you could get right now would be an x1650xt, which could be found at that site below as well if so desired)
Lower midrange video card

Middle midrange video card

You have 2 ram slots in your pc, which will support up to 2gb total.
Ram 512mb

Ram 1gb

The cost of this project I suppose would be between $100 and $200. You of course don't have to buy the ones listed above, they're more examples than anything and they'll all work in your PC without having to do too much work if you're a beginner. Best wishes!

Remember, the cooler your system is the better it will perform.

If using for a workstation (3d max and other similar programs) and not gaming, use a workstation video card.

That system seems to have a AGP slot, so a little limited to cards. You might want to do some research.

And getting 2gb of ram can help (according how large your projects are.
The other choice for cards is to get the best normal agp card you can get.
