NYU has that guy who just won an Oscar lecturing there, but he's a dropout anyway. USC and UCLA have many more top people... besides that, France and Czech Republic have some good schools too.
Do you want to study it with making films in mind, or do you just like to study film as an academic subject? For academic study, there are more choices... If it's just to make films, and not for a degree at all, the New York Film Academy is alright.
NYU, like the one above said, that's the one with the reputation for being third best in the US (the Californians come on top unfortunately). But you spend a lot of time in academics, and not much time actually doing film stuff.

New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, but consider UCLA since you're out there in California the film capital of the world and they have an excellent film program, but both schools are good schools yet NYU has turned out a lot of famous graduates from Martin Scorcese to Jerry O'Connell.
