If you have manual transmission it could be the clutch. That's what happened to my 98 RAV4 now it's speeding like it was. Try checking for your oil filters, add some additives to your gasoline, etc. Replace your spark plugs and wires if you haven't done this in a long time too.

if this is the cvh engine as suggested the hyd tappets are known to stick on occasions (due to oil sludge) holding valves open which will result in power loss and valves burning out. suggest compression and cylinder leakage test to confirme or eliminate this possiblity.

small motors work harder then big ones, you have to change filters more oil changes , cap and rotor, my Escort needed a cap and rotor every 12k miles, also change the fuel filter twice a year, add gas treatment too ! remember to change the oil every season, you will save big in the long run , i got 180k miles from mine and sold it still running good years later.

do the above and while your at it flush out the oil and replace that and the filter, your engine is a CVH and they are known to run crappy if not maintained.
