I think a lot of people that didn't have a dummy/ pacifier when they were a child, still suck their thumb even in their 20's or 30's.
If he really wants to stop, and he isn't aware he is doing it, before he goes to bed, tie a little sellotape around the nail each night.

If he wants to stop, then you can only support him.
If he has been doing it since he was a baby, it is a difficult, though not impossible habit to start to stop.
All you can do is encourage him to try to go without putting his thumb in his mouth, if he wants to stop, he will allow you to let him know when he is sucking his thumb, and take it out.
Only he can try to sleep without sucking his thumb, if he says he can't sleep without doing it, then he needs to learn how to sleep without sucking his thumb.
It will be an almost automatic action, he just needs to be made aware of it, and he can decide not to do it, if that is what he wants.
It doesn't do any harm, so don't worry if he doesn't really want to stop.
It is better than smoking.

i might ask the dentist and pediatrician previously figuring out particular or no in this. A fourteen year old ought to go through teasing by way of their friends and harm to their tooth line if the new child does the thumb sucking frequently. i'm particular there must be greater or much less concerns, based on the guy and the circumstances.

Wrap his thumbs in duck tape so he cant get to it. Keep a calander marking every time he sleeps without sucking his thumbs. Maybe this will help, maybe it wont! Try soaking his thumbs in hot sauce!

My sister sucked her thumb until she was about 16/17! I think it is something that you just grow out of in ones own time. Don't let him stress over it, there is a lot worse habits he could have, and who is he harming? Exactly, no one. Make sure he doesn't worry about it. xx

get him to paint it on his thumb nails it should do the trick.
