my car is a 94 mercury villager mini van. when i put into gear it dies so i have to keep one foot on the gas and one on the brake

Maybe the clutch is set too severe? Is it an automatic?

About 2,500 possible reasons. Give or take a 1,000...
I would start with looking for vacuum leak in the intake maniforl gasket area but a bad sensor (O2, MAP, MAF...) would cause a similar effect.

it could be either the throttle position sensor or the idle air control.they adjust the idle.also check the fuel,like the gas filter.it might not be getting enough gas to keep it idling.

Oh......Idle control valve.

Or a vacuum leak.
