Block sizes are different throughout the city. The address rule for the city is every 800 in address numbering is a mile. The "0-0" point in Madision and State.
Every 800 in any direction is a mile. Addresses are labeled with direction, e.g. 900 N Michigan would be a little more than a mile NORTH Of Madison. And since Michigan Ave is considered about 100 East so its about 1/8 mile east of State.

In Chgo & suburbs...8 blocks in a mile.
There are however "short" blocks. If you look at a street map, blocks are rectangular not square in shape. The short side is 1/2 the length of the long side.
On the south side where street names are numbers this is easy to figure out. The blocks are "short" as you head south. From Roosevelt RD (12th St) to 20th ST is 8 blocks or 1 mile. There are streets between the ones called ST. These are called Place....18th ST, 18 PL, 19thST then 19 PL etc.
