12 volts produced by a car battery with the load of your body that has about 1,000 Ohms resistance will not make a noticeable effect because it's not voltage that hurts but current, and the lower the load resistance - the higher current. If the spots on your body used to touch the battery terminals have damaged skin which lowers resistance more than 10 times, you will feel a shock because most of a human body resistance is provided by skin. More than that, if you touch one terminal with a scratched finger, and put the wire from the other terminal on certain spot on your neck, you may actually get killed. Since these circumstances rarely happen together, for practical purposes it's considered safe to touch a 12V battery.

As a car audio installer who has touched live 12v wiring and ground at the same time, many many many times, I can tell you that you probably won't feel a thing. All I've ever gotten was a bit of a sting when I've touched grounded metal while working on a live 12v circuit with sweaty hands.
A note to Frogspawn: you can't get separate voltage and amperage; high amperage can only be generated through a high resistance with high voltage. With the resistance of the human body, you won't generate lethal current with 12 volts.
Edit: Advice to Autoinspector: show me a documented case where anyone, under any circumstances, has been eletrocuted by a 12 volt battery. Just one link. And while you're at it, explain exactly what the difference is between what you said (low load resistance = higher current) and what I said (high voltage is required to generate high current through high resistance). If you think really, really hard for a while, it might occur to you that both can be true.

If you mean with your hands, nothing. There isn't enough voltage in a car battery to give you a shock. However if you joined the two terminals with a conductor, metal, causing a short circuit ,depending on the material used, the shorting material would heat up and fuse if relatively thin or if more robust the battery itself could overheat and burn.Either way if the battery was still in the car you run the risk of setting the car on fire.

If you mean crossing something conducttive between the posts,an nasty spark will be produced. Not a good thing, automotive batteries produce hydrogen gas that is very explosive, and a battery explosion is like a stick of dynamite filled with sulphric acid .

you will have a big *** spark and you could melt whatever you touched the battery with not to mention you could get 3rd degree burns you dont want to touch any thing to your battery. you could mess up your car. or your health

Do it with jumper cables.word of warning verify you have scientific coverage. If that is linked to a automobile verify you're able to have sufficient funds the fee of maintenance. in case you do no longer prefer to income something interior the classification and purely screw around, get out now do no longer pi$$off the instructor.you would be apologetic approximately it,vehicles are their pastime, and that they take save protection very extreme. that is not a classification for smarta$$ teenagers.

Nothing by touching with your hands the voltage is too low to feel and your body is not a high conductor.
Don't try it with anything conductive (Metal) It will spark and bang !!

whatever is used to touch the two posts will arc, all the current in the battery will weld the medium to the posts themselves and you will not be able to stop it and the battery will explode, spaying sulfuric acid everywhere. dont do it.

ive done that before.i took 2 screwdrivers and crossed the terminals(when they were disconnected)to see if the battery was up,and it didnt do nothing to the battery, just sparks will fly, thats all.
