Tigers have a number of techniques in their armory:
Approach
o Camouflage/Ambush - their striped markings enable them to hide in grassland or where there is shadow
o Stalk - like other members of the cat family, tigers are excellent at stalking prey
o Leap - jumping is one of the many things tigers do best. They can leap 5m up in the air, or across distances of 9-10m. They have been seen jumping well clear over 2m high fences carrying prey of approx 50kg
Attack
o Rush / Body Strike - tigers are known to leap upon their prey and knock them down with their massive bodies
o Paw strike - a single blow from their heavy paw can kill a wolf or a human and has been known to heavily injure a massive 150kg Sambar deer
o Bite (1) - with their powerful jaws, they can bite through the back of the neck of most animals, breaking their prey's neck or otherwise injuring their prey's spine
o Bite (2) - they have sharp teeth quite capable of attacking the front of the neck of their prey and injuring the major blood vessels of the neck, causing death by haemorrhage.
o Bite (3) - a bite to the legs of their prey is usually sufficient to disable them
Typical tiger tactics would be to bowl over a herbivore either by a body strike or a heavy paw strike and then to bite the throat of its prey. Generally, it would use its jaws and forepaws to grip its prey and hold on until the prey stops struggling.
Using this combination of techniques, tigers have been known to bring down massive prey more than 5X their body weight.
